For people here from Stranger Things, they actually use "Il mio ben" from Paisiello's version of the same opera (which is in Italian, rather than French). Wild to me that they would name drop the more obscure French version of the opera while playing music from an Italian version written by a different composer!

It took years for Richard to convince Joanie to sing Esclarmonde. She gave in eventually and loved it. Hee singing here especially hee phrasing was incredible

Sublime! I love Joanie from any era but her early recordings are so special.

I had never heard this! Such emotion from both singers! Joan has such an opulent sound here - especially in the lowest notes!

I wonder how many of the audience were aware that they were listening to very possibly the most extraordinary coloratura soprano in operatic history. Today's wannabes are a total joke compared to Joan.

I love the crystalline sound of early Sutherland. She was supreme in Handel and other baroque music. It seems to me that once she began singing Norma, she tried to create a darker, more "meaningful" sound, and the crystalline sound disappeared. Or maybe it was just age.

This hauntingly beautiful piece is new to me as are most of the photographs. Thank you very much

Sutherland sounds wonderful in nearly any composer’s music. Some people have mentioned her German language skills, but of course she’s singing in English here! But her diction was always pretty suspect, so she might just as well have sung in German or any other language. To my taste though, her glory was in bel canto; Wagner sits in the middle of her range, and the thrilling part of her voice lay higher.
